Grapefruit Seed Extract
(GSE)-Information and Benefits
|
Grapefruit Seed Extract (GSE),
also known as citrus seed extract, is a liquid derived from the seeds, pulp,
and white membranes of grapefruit. It was discovered in 1972 by Dr. Jacob
Harish, a physicist. This liquid is loaded with polyphenolic compounds that
are chemically converted into quaternary ammonium compounds.
Benzethonium chloride
and benzalkonium chloride, for example, are
quaternary compounds that are
toxic but have antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-fungal functions. The B
vitamin choline is another quaternary
compound which is non-toxic, and
even essential for maintaining healthy neurological function and fat
metabolism.
Today,
GSE has been widely used in various fields for the better health of people,
plants and animals. It is non-toxic, environmentally safe, and quickly
bio-degradable. It has no side effects and is much cheaper than existing
treatments or chemicals for similar applications, whether human, animal, or
agricultural in scope.
-
As an Antibiotic,
Antiseptic, Disinfectant
Some nutritionists recommend GSE for the treatment of candidiasis, earache,
throat infections, and diarrhea.
- As a Preservative in Food
GSE is a safe, natural, and an effective preservative as claimed by some
food retailers.
- As a Preservative
and to Provide the Antimicrobial Benefits in Cosmetics
Cosmetics manufacturers use GSE both
as a natural, harmless preservative and, in selected products, to provide
the antimicrobial benefits of GSE.
- As a Natural,
Harmless Pesticide in Agriculture
Gardeners, both professional and
homegrown, use GSE as a natural, harmless pesticide, and to provide the
antimicrobial benefits of GSE where mold, fungus, rust, blight, etc., are a
problem.
-
To Treat Skin Diseases,
Injuries and Infections in Livestock and Pets
GSE is an excellent remedy for skin diseases, external injuries and fungal
infections in livestock and pets. It can also cure the internal diseases
caused by parasites, bacteria, and viral or fungal infections.
- In Water Treatment
GSE is the best emergency water treatment to prevent disease when
distillation by power is not possible, and water available is of
questionable quality.
